IND vs WI T20I series : India wins the third T20I by 17 runs

In the third and final T20I in Kolkata on Sunday, Indian seamers struck in unity after Suryakumar Yadav's ferocious fifty, as the hosts cruised to a 17-run victory over the West Indies. After Deepak Chahar went out with a hamstring injury after failing to complete the third over, Harshal Patel (3/22), Venkatesh Iyer (2/23), and Shardul Thakur (2/33) did an excellent job of defending India's 184/5 total. Nicholas Pooran, the wicket-keeper batsman, continued his outstanding form with his third consecutive fifty (61 off 47 balls), but it was not enough as West Indies were dismissed for 167.
It was Rohit's third consecutive clean sweep as full-time captain, after defeating New Zealand (0-3) in T20Is and the West Indies (0-3) in ODIs. The victory also tied their record of nine consecutive victories set in 2020.
The West Indies' third consecutive bilateral series loss away from home — 0-2 to New Zealand in 2020-21 and 0-3 to Pakistan in 2021-22 — concluded a disappointing six-match losing streak in India (including three in the ODI leg).
Though rookie bowler Avesh Khan battled with his line, Chahar made an early impact for India, dismissing both openers — Kayle Mayers and Shai Hope — in the powerplay in the space of 11 deliveries.
Chahar spun the ball both ways and varied his pace smartly to surprise the Windies openers, and he gave the first breakthrough in the fifth ball after India successfully reviewed it to eliminate Mayers.
He looked on fire in his next over, taking the outside edge of Hope with a peach of an outswinger and limped off the field without completing his over.
Harshal took it up in the absence of Chahar, exhibiting his great cricketing intellect as he executed his slower ones to perfection to be the wrecker-in-chief.
Suryakumar Yadav, who scored a 31-ball 65 and was ably supported by all-rounder Venkatesh , helped India post a daunting 184 for five after being put in to bat.
Suryakumar hammered seven sixes and one boundary in an outstanding show of power hitting before being dismissed for his career-high T20 total in the final delivery.
Venkatesh, a fast bowling all-rounder, hit four fours and two sixes at the other end as the duo put up 91 runs for the fourth wicket in 37 balls to help India recover from a middle-order collapse.
Team India was reduced to 98/4 in 15 overs after losing three wickets for 55 runs in the middle overs, including that of skipper Rohit Sharma, who batted at number four.
With a magnificent inside-out six over covers off Romario Sheperd in the penultimate over, Surya strolled to his fourth T20 fifty in only 27 balls as India stepped up in style, scoring 86 runs in the final five overs.
Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad opened the batting alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, while Shreyas Iyer batted at No 3 after Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant were rested.
Ruturaj, a Maharashtra 'run machine,' impressed in his short stay at the crease and timed the ball to beautifully before going out despite playing out of his comfort zone after receiving a chance after making his debut in the Sri Lanka series in July last year.
The most expensive purchase at the IPL super auction in 2022 Ishan, who had two forgettable innings in the first two T20Is, got off to a flying start against Shepherd in the fourth over, hitting three boundaries in four balls.
Shreyas and Ishan failed to convert their starts and were out in the space of seven balls after putting on a fifty-plus stand in just 32 balls.
The middle overs were beautifully bowled by the Windies spin combo of Hayden Walsh Junior (4-0-30-1) and Roston Chase (4-0-23-1).
